Subscriptions - 2024 Edition

After seeing a few different posts of others in the community blogging about their subscriptions, I took this as a chance to review all my current subscriptions.

These are normally tracked in my big budget spreadsheet (blog post to come), but it’s always a good chance to take a step back and realise what I’m paying for.

Yearly subscriptions are broken down into a monthly cost, all charges are in NZD (unless stated otherwise).

Total - $88 per month ($1056 per year 😬)

| 🇹🇷 🇮🇳 🇸🇦 - Flags indicate where thanks to the Cheapies community I’ve managed to secure cheaper subscriptions via a VPN or other country.

👨‍💻 Apps

Duolingo+ - ~$7 per Month 🇹🇷
A few months back, I had a moment where I decided I needed to commit to something new to grow my skills and thus began my dive into learning Spanish via Duolingo. So far so good!

NYT Games - $1.99 per Month
I don’t play many mobile games these days but the NYT Mini Crossword and Wordle have me hooked.

My Fitness Pal - $0.50 per Month 🇹🇷 As part of some recent health issues, I’ve decided to focus on my health a little more which includes eating better. The app allows me to focus on doing things like reducing my sugar intake and increasing proteins and good fats.

Total - $9 per month ($108 per year)

✉️ Email and Hosting

Hetzner Storage Box - $8 per Month
Where I’ve landed after a few different transitions of Cloud Storage - Going from Dropbox -> Google Drive -> Office 365 and finally stopped on Nextcloud. At the moment I’m running a very bare bones configuration, but do like the fact at how customisable it is with plugins.

iCloud+ - $4.99 per Month
For my personal domains, I have these go to my iCloud email, mainly as I am a sucker for the apple ecosystem and the continuity across devices. Also gives me an extra level of backup for Photos and Messages.

MXRoute - ~$2 per Month
I should use this for all of my mail, however this is mainly for my business domains and needing to provide access to shared mailboxes. MXRoute have great Black Friday sales and allowed us to grab a 3 year deal at a extremely low price which works perfect for our needs.

omg.lol - $2.50 per Month
What this blog and my main website is hosted on. Happy to have jumped on board during the St Jude fundraiser and managed to get my first year at a great price, but loving the platform and what it offers so far.

Pikapods - $15 per Month
While I do try to self-host a lot of items, there is some stuff I prefer to use the experts for. I’ve been using Pikapods for almost 2 years now after discovering them on reddit and have zero complaints. My pods have changed over the years but is currently used to host an Uptime Kuma instance and Bookstack platform for my business.

Racknerd - $10 per Month
At the moment I have four seperate cloud VPS’s with Racknerd, mainly used for hosting scripts for friends or discord bots. At $30 a year for a 1GB server, its cheaper than Vultr and suits my needs without needing to scale individual servers or move stuff around.

Total - $41 per month ($492 per year)

🛠️ Other

Domains - $4 per Month
I’ve managed to consolidate my domains down from over the years and have 2 main domains I still have as well as 2 backup domains. One using .su and one being a .xyz domain - While they don’t have great reputations as TLD’s - They are mainly for personal use and aren’t used for mail/hosting anything important.

Mediafusion - $17 per month

Part of my streaming setup requires me to share an account with a few friends and family members and thanks to the team at Elfhosted, Mediafusion (tied in with Stremthru) helps me achieve that!

Total - $21 per month ($252 per year)

🎵 Streaming

Youtube Premium - ~$3 per Month 🇸🇦. As someone who travels a lot and doesn’t consume a lot of other streaming platforms, Youtube Premium is worth every penny just for offline viewing and zero ads.

Total - $3 per month ($36 per year)

🛡️ VPN / Security

Bitwarden - ~$2 per Month
While I do have access to 1Password Family for free via my work, I prefer to keep all my logins under my own control/access - For $24 a year and peace of mind around security, you can’t go wrong.

Webshare - $25 per Month
As part of a business I own, we run a number of Web Scraping scripts and use Webshare to help with this, I maintain a personal subscription as well just for testing and running my own pieces as well.

Total - $28 per month ($336 per year)

🏆 Honorable Mentions

Pocket Casts - Free
I’ve been a Pocket Casts user since their beginning and was lucky enough to get a lifetime Plus subscription because of this. As someone who listens to 3-4 hours of podcasts most days, I can’t imagine listening to podcasts any other way.

Adguard DNS - ~$1 per month
While I normally shy away from Stacksocial deals, as someone who was already using Adguard DNS being able to grab a 5 year subscription for $30USD made financial sense. Being able to set custom rules for different devices and have ad blocking across my whole network is the gift that keeps on giving.
